This time, April 23rd, was Saint George’s turn – England’s Patron Saint and English National Day.

At our school students carried out some research work on this saint and exhibited colourful cards (and even cartoons) showing the most remarkable aspects of the saint’s life. For those who might have missed the chance to see the exhibition, here is a brief account of his life: Saint George was a Roman soldier back in the 3rd/4th century. He was famous for the courage and boldness he demonstrated before the enemy. While his body belonged to the army his soul belonged to Christ. At a time when Christianity was forbidden and Christians were persecuted and slaughtered, Saint George never gave up his Faith. One day he was ordered to torture and kill some Christians. He refused to accomplish this assignment and was therefore beheaded. That is why he became a martyr and a saint worshipped in the whole Christian world. Saint George became England’s patron and his flag (a red cross on a white background) was adopted as England’s national flag.

Apart from the Saint’s history, there is the legend representing Saint George killing a huge and disgusting dragon, which happened to live in a well preventing the inhabitants of the nearby village from collecting water. With this legendary act of his he proved that evil can be beaten when we show determination and commitment.
